In the moustache-monkey (Cercopithecus cephus) the final color of the fur is mottled-greenish with the throat white; within the male the end of the tail is chesnut, but the face is essentially the most ornamented part, the pores and skin being chiefly bluish-grey, shading right into a blackish tint beneath the eyes, with the higher lip of a delicate blue, clothed on the lower edge with a thin black moustache; the whiskers are orange-coloured, with the higher half black, forming a band which extends backwards to the ears, the latter being clothed with whitish hairs. The face of the Cercopithecus petaurista (fig. 77) is black, the whiskers and beard being white, with a defined, round, white spot on the nostril, covered with short white hair, which supplies to the animal an almost ludicrous side. The appearance of Cercocebus æthiops is grotesque, with its black face, white whiskers and collar, chesnut head, and a large naked white spot over every eyelid. An commentary made by Mr. Sclater properly illustrates our ignorance of the legal guidelines which regulate the appearance and disappearance of stripes; the species of Asinus which inhabit the Asiatic continent are destitute of stripes, not having even Fig. 72. I’ll point out only two other monkeys for his or her beauty; and I’ve selected these as presenting slight sexual differences in color, which renders it in some extent probable that both sexes owe their elegant appearance to sexual selection. This view is strengthened by the differences in color between the sexes occurring virtually solely, as may be collected from the previous particulars, in these groups and subgroups of mammals, which present different and strongly-marked secondary sexual characters; these being likewise because of sexual selection. Mr. Reeks has given me a curious instance of an animal profiting by being peculiarly colored. Just about every man has an instance of premature ejaculation on occasion. The hare on her type is a well-known instance of concealment via color; yet this precept partly fails in a intently-allied species, the rabbit, for when running to its burrow, it is made conspicuous to the sportsman, and no doubt to all beasts of prey, by its upturned white tail.
With a substantial variety of species, particularly of the smaller varieties, each sexes have been colored, independently of sexual selection, for the sake of protection; but not, so far as I can judge, in so many instances, nor in so striking a manner, as in most of the decrease classes. We could feel almost certain that the spots and stripes disappeared at or near maturity in the progenitors of our present species, so that they were nonetheless retained by the young; and, owing to the law of inheritance at corresponding ages, were transmitted to the young of all succeeding generations. From this condition there’s but a really small step to the entire absence of spots in the adults in any respect seasons; and, lastly, to their absence in any respect ages and seasons, as occurs with certain species. It’s generally more distinctly orange than in any Mongolian, and in a number of species it’s blue, passing into violet or grey. A nonetheless more ancient progenitor probably somewhat resembled the Hyemoschus aquaticus-for this animal is spotted, and the hornless males have large exserted canine teeth, of which some few true deer still retain rudiments. Stop judging yourself, and strike a few poses.
From the existence of this excellent sequence, and extra especially from the fawns of so many species being spotted, we could conclude that the now living members of the deer family are the descendants of some historic species which, like the axis deer, was noticed at all ages and seasons. 17. If I study that an offender is living in my neighborhood, what do I do to protect my kids? Within the Virginian deer the young are likewise spotted, and about 5 per cent. With many kinds of deer the young are marked with elegant white spots, of which their parents exhibit not a trace. The Mantchurian deer (Cervus mantchuricus) is noticed throughout the whole year, but, as I’ve seen in the Zoological Gardens, the spots are much plainer during the summer, when the overall color of the coat is lighter, than during the winter, when the overall colour is darker and the horns are fully developed.
